Free: As long as you're willing to overlook a few ads at the bottom of the screen, TextNow is free. You can pay to remove the ads, but they're not intrusive enough to warrant the additional cost.

Customization: You can set a wallpaper for your conversations using photos in your image library as well as customize your sound notification options for messaging sessions.

Annoyingly long setup: Captcha verification is understandable to prevent spam bots, but when the verification process goes on too long, the cost-benefit ratio seems unfavorable.

Free within U.S. & Canada only: You can only make complimentary calls within the U.S. and Canada. You can, however, make low-cost international calls by adding money or earning free money by completing offers.

Obnoxious in-text notification: When you text someone who isn't using the app, they'll receive the notification "Sent free from TextNow.com," along with the message. Talk about free advertising.Random phone number: This app doesn't text or make calls from your regular phone number, which means that if your contact information doesn't show up when you text your friends who use the app, you will have to identify yourself.
